Taylor – Systems
A Day in the Life of Systems
I get in before the US markets open and scan our dashboards to make sure all of our hardware and software is configured and working as expected. I’m not on-call this week, but I address the few low-urgency notifications that didn’t raise alerts overnight. Once the markets open, I finish running timing tests on a brand new model of network card to see if I find a latency-reducing performance increase. It turns out that I do, so I report my findings to the rest of the team and we decide to begin the process to make that card the new standard on our machines around the world.
I get up for a snack (our kitchen is well-stocked) and suddenly find myself in the middle of a Nerf war! Once the action has died down, I curl up on a cozy corner couch and dig into a longer-term project of my own design. Today, I’m working to build a new Python tool to refactor and fully automate our existing install process for new machines. In the late afternoon when the US markets close, I can start to work on bulk batches of production machines. There are some that need software updates, some that need kernel upgrades, others that need full hardware replacement, and many that are being freshly installed to scale up our cutting-edge trading operations. With our suite of deployment tools, I collaborate with my teammates to coordinate all the moving parts. When I leave to go home, everything is humming smoothly.
